Beards: More Than Just Hair—A Story of Biology, Power, and Perception

2 minutes read

Editor’s note: The human face tells a story, and for many men, that narrative includes a beard. While the difference in facial hair between men and women often gets chalked up to hormones, the truth is far more nuanced, weaving together threads of biology, evolution, and shifting cultural ideals.

At first glance, the beard seems like a simple product of testosterone’s influence, but the real mechanism is layered. Testosterone and its derivative, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), interact with hair follicles, but only certain follicles—those coded by genetics—respond by producing thick, terminal hair. This explains why some men sport full beards while others struggle with patchiness, and why most women, even with some testosterone, don’t see the same result: their follicles simply aren’t as sensitive to these hormones.

Looking back through the lens of evolution, beards likely signaled maturity, health, and social dominance—qualities that could attract mates or intimidate rivals. Ancient societies recognized this, but their attitudes were far from uniform. In Egypt, beards were a symbol of status (even pharaohs wore false ones); in Greece, they embodied wisdom; but in the Middle Ages, shifting norms sometimes equated beards with wildness or heresy.

Fast forward to today, and facial hair is still loaded with meaning. Modern psychology finds that beards can influence perceptions of masculinity, trustworthiness, and even aggression. Yet, what’s considered attractive or professional can change dramatically from one era—or culture—to the next. The contemporary grooming industry, from beard oils to barbershops, thrives on these evolving standards.

Ultimately, the beard is a living artifact, reflecting not just our biology, but the changing currents of human history and identity.
