How Can I Change My Address with the Post Office Online?
3 minutes read
Moving to a new home can be hectic, but updating your address with the post office doesn’t have to be! The United States Postal Service (USPS) makes it easy to change your address online in just a few simple steps. Here’s how you can get it done quickly and securely from the comfort of your home:
- Visit the Official USPS Change of Address Website
Go to the official USPS Change of Address page at https://moversguide.usps.com. Be cautious of third-party sites that may charge extra fees. - Choose Whether Your Move is Permanent or Temporary
Indicate if your move is permanent (you’re not returning to your old address) or temporary (you’ll be returning within 6 months to a year). - Fill Out the Online Form
Enter your personal information, including your old address, new address, and the date you want mail forwarding to begin. You’ll also need to provide a valid email address for confirmation. - Verify Your Identity
To prevent fraud, USPS requires a small identity verification fee (currently $1.10), which you can pay using a credit or debit card in your name and address. - Review and Submit Your Request
Carefully review your details before submitting. Once submitted, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a confirmation code. Keep this code for reference or to make changes later.
- Most mail will be forwarded for 12 months (First-Class Mail®), but some items like magazines may only be forwarded for 60 days.
- Update your address directly with important senders (banks, subscriptions, etc.), as USPS forwarding doesn’t notify them of your new address.
- You can also update your address at any local post office using a paper PS Form 3575 if you prefer not to do it online.
Changing your address online with the post office is fast, secure, and ensures you won’t miss important mail during your move. Don’t forget to update your address with other organizations and services for a smooth transition!
