How ChatGPT’s New AI Age Prediction Shields Young Users

OpenAI has introduced an AI-powered age prediction feature to ChatGPT, aiming to automatically detect whether a user is under 18 and adjust the chatbot experience accordingly. This system analyzes account data—such as account age, claimed age, login times, and usage patterns—to estimate a user’s likely age, even if they haven’t disclosed it directly.

If the model determines someone is likely under 18 (or is unsure), ChatGPT restricts access to certain types of content. Specifically, it reduces exposure to graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or violent roleplay, self-harm descriptions, and content promoting unhealthy beauty standards. These protections are based on expert guidance in child development and aim to create a safer environment for teens and children.

For users incorrectly categorized as under 18, OpenAI allows further verification through uploading a selfie, using Persona (a third-party service also adopted by Roblox), though unlike some competitors, it doesn’t request government ID. While these measures help protect minors from harmful content, some privacy concerns remain, and the accuracy of AI age prediction is not foolproof.
